Refuge Visits By Appointment Only
Refuge Visits By Appointment Only
It has long been known that horses have a very strong connection to humans. They have an inherent empathetic nature that promotes an immediate connection to those who are dealing with emotional obstacles or physical difficulties. Our program offers individuals an opportunity to spend time in the presence of horses while finding peace and comfort with these noble animals. Through things like our Tranquility Trails, the program is designed to encourage a time of reflection, distraction and tranquility all while encouraging a time of emotional healing. These programs are suitable for most individuals without regard to horse experience or knowledge. Riding opportunities are not a part of these programs as they are crafted for a personal connection and time spent with a horse.
Our director of operations, David Wilson, has a career that spans 40 years. Equally divided between his time as a Funeral Director and the later years in Law Enforcement. This career has given David a unique and very deep understanding of the rigors of these professions and service careers. He is dedicated to helping others find the peace and focus to achieve a better life while sharing a relationship with one of the most noble of creatures, the Horse.

Equine encounter therapy is unique in that it offers an opportunity to spend time with horses while not requiring any riding or advanced handling by the guest. It gives guests a opportunity to simply be in the presence of the horse. Guests are encouraged to touch, feel and share the amazing energy and compassionate nature of the horse and when appropriate, can participate in basic grooming such as brushing or even helping to feed the horses. This type of therapy is appropriate for anyone regardless of horse experience or knowledge and all encounters are under direct supervision.
First and foremost, each equine encounter session is private, confidential and unique to the needs of the guest. Upon initial contact with us about scheduling a visit we will spend time talking with the guest to discuss what level of encounter is appropriate for their needs. This will include any special arrangements that may be needed as well as any additional information we may require to have a successful and safe equine encounter. A date and time will then be scheduled for that guest(s). When the guests arrive, they will be greeted and escorted to the horse areas for a brief overview of what the encounter will involve and also to share some basic items about the horses and what to expect when in their presence. This will include some basic safety items and a chance for the guest to ask any questions prior to meeting their horse. The guests are then escorted to the assigned horse's area where the encounter will begin. In that each guest has unique needs and situations, each encounter will also be unique and tailored to that individual guest. The encounter is supervised by a refuge professional, and safety is always our main concern. Depending on the level of encounter they may range in time from half an hour to an hour or more, again, based on the individual needs of the guest.
Water and a place for rest will also be available when needed and appropriate. Guests who are interested in spending time on a tranquility trail walk in the pastures will be shown the area and allowed to have a self-directed walk and time for reflection.
All of our equine therapy offerings are at no cost. We feel strongly that this is part of our calling to help others while also giving the horses a purpose. Thus our motto, "Where Purpose Meets Peace." In that we are a 501c non-profit organization, we do accept donations and those are greatly appreciated as they help us continue this very important work.
