Horse encounters at the refuge

Horse Encounters at The Refuge are quiet, ground-based experiences rooted in presence, respect, and the natural social nature of the horse. These guided visits offer individuals the opportunity to spend unhurried time in the company of our senior residents, experiencing the calm and steady rhythm of the ranch.

While many guests find these encounters deeply meaningful, our primary commitment remains the peace and dignity of the horses in our care. All visits are thoughtfully structured and limited in scope to preserve the stability and comfort essential to senior retirement. Riding is not part of these encounters, as they are designed to foster quiet connection and shared stillness.

The Davissa Horse Refuge exists first as a permanent home for retired and displaced horses. These encounters are an extension of that mission allowing guests to experience the quiet strength and presence that defines life at the refuge.....

The Davissa Horse Refuge is not a licensed therapy provider. Our encounters are experiential and guided in nature, designed to offer calm presence rather than clinical intervention.

those who can benefit.....

Individuals Seeking Reflection and Mental Rest

Those desiring quiet time away from daily pressures often find the steady presence of the horse grounding and restorative. Horses live fully in the present, and time spent alongside them encourages a slower rhythm — one rooted in calm observation, breath, and stillness.

First Responders & Healthcare Professionals

Individuals in service professions — including Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, Nurses, and Physicians — regularly carry significant responsibility. Our encounters offer a structured, unhurried environment where they may step away briefly from the demands of their work and experience quiet presence without expectation.

End-of-Life & Hospice Families

For hospice patients, caregivers, and families, these encounters can provide a peaceful space for reflection during a tender season. The gentle strength and steady nature of the horse often complement moments of remembrance, gratitude, and shared quiet.

Ministers, Counselors & Care Professionals

Those who serve others in emotionally demanding roles may benefit from time spent in a setting that asks nothing of them beyond respectful presence. The refuge offers a calm environment where stillness and reflection are honored.

Veterans

Veterans navigating transition or seeking renewed grounding may find meaningful connection in the quiet companionship of the horse. Like many of our residents, they understand service, change, and resilience — and often appreciate the steady, expectation-free nature of these encounters.

Details about the program

What is a horse encounter....

Horse Encounters at The Refuge are guided, ground-based experiences that offer guests the opportunity to spend quiet, unhurried time in the presence of our senior horses. No riding or advanced handling is required.

These visits are designed to allow individuals to simply be alongside the horse — observing, breathing, and engaging at a calm and respectful pace.

When appropriate, guests may participate in light, supervised interaction such as gentle grooming or assisting with simple care routines. All encounters are conducted under direct supervision to ensure the comfort and safety of both horse and guest.

These experiences are suitable for individuals regardless of prior horse knowledge or experience.

What to expect:

Each Horse Encounter is scheduled in advance and structured to preserve the peace and dignity of the refuge. Prior to the visit, we will speak with the guest to determine the appropriate format and any necessary accommodations.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed and provided a brief orientation covering safety guidelines, expectations, and an introduction to the horse they will meet. Time is allowed for questions before the encounter begins.

Encounters unfold at the pace of the horse. While many of our residents are social and receptive, each horse is an individual and may take time to warm to a new presence. Horses are perceptive animals and naturally respond to the emotional tone of those around them. A calm, steady approach supports a meaningful and positive interaction.

Guests are encouraged to allow the horse to guide the level of contact. Our team will gently direct the interaction as needed to ensure comfort and safety for all involved. Interactions may be adjusted at any time based on the well-being of the horse.

Encounters are guided within a consistent structure and typically range from thirty minutes to one hour. Depending on the nature of the visit, guests may also be offered time for quiet reflection in designated areas.

Water and seating are available as needed.

Participation & Support

Horse Encounters at The Refuge are offered without a required fee. As part of our broader mission, we believe access to quiet, respectful time with our residents should remain available to those who may benefit.

The Davissa Horse Refuge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported entirely through private contributions. Voluntary donations are welcomed and directly sustain the lifelong care of our horses, the preservation of the ranch, and the continuation of these guided encounters.
